Why Boat Insurance Matters Here

Washington's waters mix heavy ferry traffic, strong tidal currents, cold water hazards, and remote areas. A modern boat policy bundles hull (your boat), liability (bodily injury & property damage you cause), medical payments, and options like on-water towing, fuel-spill liability, salvage & wreck removal, and fishing gear/personal effects. If you trailer, we'll address trailer coverage and where auto liability responds during over-the-road incidents.

Planning Strait of Juan de Fuca crossings or San Juans trips? We'll set navigation limits that match your plans and discuss seasonal lay-up periods, storm haul-outs, and marina contract requirements.

Washington Boating Basics (What to Know)

Registration & Title

Most motorized vessels operating on WA waters must be registered with WA Department of Revenue. Vessels over 16ft or with motors over 10hp require registration. Keep registration aboard whenever under way.

Boater Education Card

Boaters born after January 1, 1954 need a WA Boater Education Card. Approved courses through NASBLA providers. Carry your card while operating.

Local Planning

Check tides/currents (Deception Pass, Admiralty Inlet), no-wake zones, ferry schedules, and pumpout access before you cast off. Marinas commonly require proof of insurance to dock.

Tip: If your boat is financed or you berth at a marina, expect minimum liability limits and "proof of insurance" (COI). We'll provide certificates at binding and renewal.

Boat Insurance FAQ - Washington State

Is boat insurance required in Washington?

Washington does not require boat insurance by law, but marinas routinely require proof of liability coverage before allowing docking or berthing, and lenders require hull coverage if financed. Auto policies cover trailer liability on roads but not on water. Given Puget Sound's ferry traffic, strong currents, and cold water hazards, adequate liability is strongly recommended.

What's the difference between Agreed Value and Actual Cash Value for hull coverage?

Agreed Value pays the full insured amount for total loss with no depreciation. Actual Cash Value pays depreciated market value at loss time. Agreed Value costs more but eliminates disputes-ideal for upgraded or financed boats.

Do I need a Boater Education Card to get insurance in Washington?

WA Boater Education Card is legally required for those born after 1954. It can improve insurance eligibility and premiums. Carry it while operating.

What navigation territory for Puget Sound to San Juans?

Navigation limits define coverage area. Inland-only policies won't cover San Juans or Strait crossings. We'll set territory for your Puget Sound, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and San Juan plans.

Does boat insurance cover on-water towing and salvage?

Optional coverages-must be added. Towing covers ungroundings, fuel delivery, jump-starts. Salvage covers vessel recovery costs, essential in remote WA waters.

What is fuel spill liability and do I need it?

Covers cleanup costs from fuel/oil discharge. Excluded from standard liability-add as endorsement. Essential in environmentally sensitive Puget Sound and coastal areas.

Does my homeowners or auto policy cover my boat?

Limited coverage only. Homeowners may cover small boats as property but exclude watercraft liability. Auto covers trailer on road only. Need standalone boat policy for full protection.

How does lay-up season affect my boat insurance premium?

Lay-up periods reduce premiums for storage months when boat isn't used. Match dates to your haul-out schedule. Some carriers offer storm haul-out reimbursement.
