Why Boat Insurance Matters Here

Utah's high-altitude lakes bring wind chop, sudden storms, rocks, and hypothermia risks. A modern boat policy bundles hull (your boat), liability (bodily injury & property damage you cause), medical payments, and options like on-water towing, fuel-spill liability, salvage & wreck removal, and fishing gear/personal effects. If you trailer, we’ll also address trailer coverage and where auto liability responds during over-the-road incidents.

Heading to Lake Powell's canyons or trailering to Bear Lake? We’ll set navigation limits that match your plans and talk through seasonal lay-up periods, windstorm plans, and marina contract requirements.

Utah Boating Basics (What to Know)

Registration & Title

Motorized boats and PWCs must be registered with Utah Division of Motor Vehicles (UDNR). Keep registration aboard whenever under way. Boats over 17ft may require title.

Boater Education Card

Operators born after Jan 1, 1983 and 16+ need a Boater Education Card from UDNR-approved course. Carry your card while operating.

Local Planning

Check AIS decontamination stations, wind forecasts, water levels (especially Lake Powell), and no-wake zones before launch. Marinas commonly require proof of insurance to dock.

Tip: If your boat is financed or you berth at a marina, expect minimum liability limits and “proof of insurance” (COI). We’ll provide certificates at binding and renewal.

Boat Insurance FAQ - Utah

Is boat insurance required in Utah?

Utah does not require boat insurance by law, but it is effectively mandatory in practice for most owners. Marinas at Lake Powell, Bear Lake, and others require proof of liability coverage before docking, and lenders require hull coverage if financed. If you trailer, your auto policy covers liability on the road but not on water-so a separate boat policy is needed once launched. With crowded ramps and wind chop, liability coverage is essential.

What's the difference between Agreed Value and Actual Cash Value for hull coverage?

Agreed Value means the carrier pays the full insured amount in a total loss, with no depreciation-what you and the insurer agreed at inception. Actual Cash Value (ACV) pays depreciated market value at loss time, often less than replacement cost. Agreed Value has higher premiums but avoids depreciation disputes. For boats with upgrades or financing, it's usually better.

Do I need a Boater Education Card to get insurance in Utah?

The Utah Boater Education Card is legally required for operators 16+ born after Jan 1, 1983-it's not just for insurance. Get it from UDNR-approved courses. For insurance, it can improve eligibility and rates with safety discounts. Carry it while operating; enforcement is common.

What navigation territory do I need for Lake Powell or Bear Lake?

Navigation limits define coverage area-get them wrong and you're uncovered. Inland lake policies may not cover Lake Powell's canyons fully. We'll set territories for Utah Lake, Great Salt Lake, Bear Lake, Powell, and reservoirs, matching your trailering and cruising plans. Verify before heading out.

Does boat insurance cover on-water towing and salvage?

Not automatically-towing/assistance and salvage are optional with separate limits. Towing covers ungroundings, fuel, jump-starts, tow-back. Salvage applies to raising/removing vessels-costs soar in reservoirs or Powell. With remote locations and distances, both are recommended.

What is fuel spill liability and do I need it?

Fuel spill liability covers cleanup costs from accidental discharges, excluded from standard liability. Must be added. Utah law holds owners responsible, especially near invasive-sensitive waters. Low-cost addition for powered vessels.

Does my homeowners or auto policy cover my boat?

Only limited-homeowners may cover small boats as property but exclude watercraft liability. Auto covers trailer on-road only. For real value/power, standalone boat policy provides hull, liability, medical, towing, salvage tailored to marine risks.

How does lay-up season affect my boat insurance premium and coverage?

Lay-up is a no-use storage period (often winter) for premium credits-violation voids coverage. We'll align dates to your schedule: too short overpays, too long risks gaps. Some offer haul-out reimbursement for storms.
