The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire was founded by Benjamin Franklin and his fellow firefighters to provide fire insurance to homeowners in Philadelphia and the surrounding region. The company issued its first policies in 1752. Although their policies have changed to meet the needs of the modern market their goals remain the same. They are still committed to writing urban risks, which they define as row homes, flat roofs, older-aged and low-valued or multi-family residences, while focusing on suburban and higher value homes as well. They provide homeowners, fire and liability insurance to customers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland through The Philadelphia Contributionship and its subsidiary companies.
